We are delighted to announce that one of our Part 1 Architectural Assistants, Adam Rich, is a winner of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) Young Designers Competition.
Adam was one of eight finalists presenting their research projects at the Future of Design conference at the University of Sheffield on 21st April. His presentation on Auxetics was selected as one of two winners following a vote from the 80-strong audience.
Adam's research study, Architectural Applications of Auxetics, carried out over a six week period, explored the use of these emerging metamaterials. Known for their unusual mechanical properties, auxetics become larger when pulled apart.
The project explored the potentialities of macroscopic auxetics in architecture through the iterative design of moving physical models and digital simulations using skills he developed over the course of his architecture degree.
