Colin Rice, Practice Leader at Cullinan Studio who led the research project says:
“It was fantastic to have our work to improve collaboration in the industry recognised in this sought after award.”
Brendan Sexton, Project Architect at Cullinan Studio and one of the RIBAJ's Rising Stars Cohort of 2016 has been leading the way testing BIMspace on site at the National Automotive Innovation Centre. He says:
“It is great to see how customers have discovered value in many ways thanks to the BIMspace product.”
BIMspace is the outcome of a research project funded by Innovate UK that looked into bringing immersive visualisation techniques - that have greatly benefited the automotive industry - into the construction industry. We worked with WMG, Holovis International and Hyde Housing Association to develop the practical installation of BIMspace and test its use within our workflows.
BIM (Building Information Modelling) is helping the construction industry to optimise design by allowing designers and constructors to work together as never before. A BIM model is more than just a 3D model, with many dimensions of its embedded data - geometry, performance attributes, time, cost, safety - needing a new tool to support their visualisation.
BIMspace is that tool.
BIMspace provides a collaborative meeting space where three large screens joined together allow immersion in the project's data. Head Mounted Displays supplement the facility for an immersive visualisation of the design.
Multiple sets of data can be seen together allowing better informed decisions to be made faster. This saves time and money, and helps avoids mistakes.
A pilot version of BIMspace has been used on the hugely complex £80M National Automotive Innovation Centre at the University of Warwick, being built by Balfour Beatty. Since it was installed in a site cabin in spring 2015, BIMspace has been embraced as a powerful tool, supporting collaborative working between designers, the main contractor and their supply chain.
"We can review what we have live built back in the BIMspace against what is in the model and we can do a comparison, which is all in that effort to get right first time, good quality, with the right client expectations and hopefully built on time, built on budget." Matt Johnson, Project Manager, Balfour Beatty
