We thought a good way to celebrate five decades of creating beautiful, useful and sustainable buildings and places would be to mark the occassion in one of those buildings: St Mary's Church, Barnes.
2015 also happens to mark 800 years since Archbishop Stephen Langton consecrated the church's first extension on his return from the sealing of Magna Carta. At our joint celebration, Ted Cullinan told the story of how we redesigned the church after it was decimated by fire in 1978.
The original church can be dated back to the 12th century. It has been continually adapted and altered over those 900 years. Following the fire, we created a design that reaffirmed the architectural and historical significance of the mediaeval origin, but also provided a place of worship for today, and for the future.
