Bunhill 2 Energy Centre has been granted planning approval by Islington Council.
The project is part of the borough wide Decentralised Energy Programme to find practical and innovative solutions to tackle fuel poverty, affordable warmth and carbon emissions in the borough.
Bunhill 2 is the second phase of the Bunhill Heat and Power project. It will generate and pipe hot water to heat homes in the same way as the existing system, and in addition will capture and use waste heat from an electrical sub-station and from the London Underground Tube system via a heat exchange coil, fitted to the existing ventilation shaft on the site.
Perforated copper panels, designed in collaboration with the artist Toby Paterson, will screen the pre-fabricated plant equipment whilst improving the character of this street corner site.
