Conceived as a focus for the new Greenwich Millennium Village, this project provides community, education and healthcare facilities on a single brownfield site.

Millennium Primary School & Health Centre

The primary school accommodates 420 pupils as well as an early years learning centre for one to three year olds. The primary school also integrates children with special educational needs.

A spine of colour-coded drums help pupils and staff to identify classrooms along the main circulation route as well as from the playground. These drums provide either space for shared teaching between two classrooms or a light-well bringing natural light deep into the plan. The light-wells also provide visual connection between the two floors of the school.

The health centre revolves around a spacious central waiting room beneath a large skylight, putting the patient at the heart of the building.

A ‘Village Hall’ provides shared facilities for the school, health centre and local community.

Both the school and health centre face south with views towards the landscaped playgrounds and gardens.

The project has proved of interest to both education and healthcare clients. The school is often cited as an exemplar way of organising schools as a departure from more institutional models.

Overview of the Primary School and Health Centre within the Greenwich Millennium Village

The consistency of the durable, English-grown larch cladding on the public façades helps to unify the three functions of school, health centre and community facility. Stair towers at the ends of corridors and at the main entrance act as landmarks providing visitors with points of reference.

The circular ‘Village Hall’ shared by the community acts as a gatepost to the Millennium Village. This Hall is surrounded by adult learning facilities on the first floor and a kitchen, storage and sports changing facilities on the ground floor. A creche is provided for parents visiting the health centre or taking further education courses.

The health centre includes minor surgery and advances in diagnostic technologies, preventative medicine, welfare support and Community Health Council work and training under one roof.

Staff in the health centre are encouraged to use meeting rooms in the ‘Village Hall’ to spread the word on healthy living.

Throughout the design process we worked with health architecture specialist Ann Noble, the local GP and council education department and the DfES.

The south façades of the primary school and health centre are fully glazed to benefit from solar gain and natural light in which to teach or consult by.

Brightly colour awnings not only provide protection from unwanted solar gain and glare when necessary, but also add a dynamic, human quality to the elevations.

Windows to the south are openable in order to offset overheating in summer and give some level of user control throughout the year.

The primary school was the first designed in the UK to go beyond the stringent daylighting, ventilation, air quality and energy requirements of Building Bulletins 87 and 90.

Share light-wells bring daylight to the back of the classrooms. TermoDeck was used as an alternative to air-conditioning. TermoDeck works by passing fresh air through pre-cast concrete planks, allowing passive heating and cooling throughout the year.
