Pitville Art College Campus Masterplan
The development included new student rooms, central student services and a Media Studies building.
The £6m Media Centre, completed in the first phase in 1993, provides accommodation for the photographic, video and graphics departments.
The three-storey steel framed building encloses a central glazed courtyard which completes the existing Art College and provides an interior arena for exhibitions and shows. This space provides access to the various departments by way of dramatic walkways suspended from the central trusses.
There are extensive photographic and TV facilities, including two double-height studios with galleries that allow a flexible use of the space. Six graphics studios overlook the courtyard. The video department has a full production suite including an audio-visual studio and a lecture theatre.
The £4m second phase provides a dining room above a student union bar and 253 student residences contained in eight four-storey pavilions.
Each pavilion contains 27 study bedrooms, together with two semi-detached three-storey pavilions enclosing a large courtyard space. The rooms are accessed from a shared central hall served by a top-lit spiral staircase.
The rooms project out beyond the building line, allowing the glazing to wrap around three sides of the space, providing a range of different lighting conditions.
